中文摘要： 本文探讨“於”字在现代北京话中何以读阳平而不读阴平的成因。本文提出的核心假设是在高频常用词“於是”所形成的连调域中，“於”在后字“是”的下降调的逆向异化作用之下由高平调转化为高升调。由于“於”字不能单用，且用“於”的其他组合或不常用或古语、书面语色彩甚浓，故而发生在“於是”一语中的变化得以扩散至全体。这一过程约完成于十八、十九世纪之交。

英文摘要： This paper deals with the issue why the yú於 has become a first-tone(yīnpíng) word, instead of a second-tone (yángpíng) word, in modern standard Mandarin. The core hypothesis advanced in this paper is that in the domain of tone sandhi, yúshì 於是, the first syllable yú changed its original level tone into a rising tone due to the dissimilation triggered by the falling tone of the second syllable shì是. Also, since the yú itself cannot be used independently and other compounds with yú are either not commonly used or much colored with ancient and written language, the tonal change that happened to yúshì於是 thus was able to spread to all other compounds with yú於. The process of such a change ended approximately in the late 18th century and early 19th century.
